Se celebran una vez al año en Las Vegas. Su evento principal se disputa en la variedad de Hold'em.
Se juegan varios torneos con entradas ("buy-in") de 1500$ hasta 10000$. Los eventos de 10000$ son los campeonatos mundiales. Existen eventos de no limit, fixed limit, pot limit, omaha y varios torneos de stud póquer.
Además muchos jugadores profesionales juegan un torneo con una entrada de 50.000$ en la modalidad H.O.R.S.E.
El inicio de la Serie Mundial de Póquer fue en 1968 por Tom Moore de San Antonio, Texas en el Hotel y Casino Holiday, en Reno, Nevada|Reno. Fue un evento por invitación. Este primer evento lo ganó Crandell Addington, quien quedó 8 veces entre los 10 mejores del torneo; record que aún no ha sido batido.
